Matthews signs five-year extension with Maple Leafs

5 febbraio 2019 20:58

Auston Matthews has signed a five-year contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Toronto signed the 2016 number one overall pick to a deal worth $11.634 million on an average annual value on Tuesday.

The deal is slightly less than what Connor McDavid signed for with the Houston Oilers in July 2017, as the 2016-17 Hart Trophy winner earns about $12.5 million annually.

Matthews has 23 goals and 23 assists in 38 games for the Maple Leafs this season. His 1.21 points per game is the best he has posted since debuting with Toronto in 2016.

He may not exceed the 40 goals he scored in 2016 because he missed almost all of November with a shoulder injury.

Matthews joins fellow Toronto youngster William Nylander, who was also signed by the Maple Leafs long term in December.

His deal is for six years and worth about $6.9 million annually.
